Traceability From Block to Container
Every exporter says their coffee is traceable. The useful question is not whether, but to what — and at which handover the answer stops being a record and starts being an assurance.
Traceability is a chain of records. It is only as good as its weakest handover, and it is worth testing rather than accepting.
The handovers
For Indian coffee, identity can be lost at each of these points:

The bolded row is where most Indian traceability actually fails, and it is not usually anyone's fault — it is what a shared curing works is designed to do. See what a curing works actually does.
The four levels
Be specific about which one is on offer.
Country. "Indian coffee." Almost meaningless for a buyer's purposes and satisfies nothing.
Region. "Chikmagalur arabica." Better, and supported by the GI where it applies — see Chikmagalur. Still an area, not a place.
Farm. A named estate, with an address and a person. This is what most people mean when they say traceable, and it is a real step up.
Block. Named parcels within the farm, with their own coordinates, altitude, varieties and picking dates. This is what EUDR effectively requires and what a genuinely controlled chain can produce.
An exporter offering "farm-level traceability" for a lot assembled from many farms is offering something else. Ask how many farms.
What evidence looks like
At each stage, a record that could be shown to an auditor:
- Field records — block, date, quantity of cherry delivered.
- Processing records — which cherry went into which fermentation, duration, and outcome. See fermentation control.
- Drying records — which batch on which beds, start and finish, final moisture.
- Curing records — which dried lot entered, what came out by grade, and how it was kept separate.
- Bagging records — marks and numbers tying bags to the lot.
- Shipping documents — tying those marks to the container. See export documents.
If the chain is complete, a buyer holding a bag mark can work backwards to a block and a picking date. If it is not, there is a point where the trail becomes an assurance instead of a record, and it is worth knowing exactly where.
Why it stopped being optional
Traceability used to be a marketing differentiator. Under EUDR it becomes a condition of entry: the operator must hold plot geolocation for the land the coffee grew on, and must be able to connect that land to the goods being placed on the market.

Questions to ask
To what level is this lot traceable — country, region, farm or block? How many farms contributed? Where is it cured, and if the facility is shared, how is segregation maintained and recorded? Can you show the records tying the bag marks to the blocks?
The last question is the one that distinguishes a system from an intention. Most exporters can answer the first three.
Where Hoysala stands
Hoysala grows, cures and grades its own coffee, so lot identity is not lost to a shared curing works — the weak point described above does not apply here.
