Chikmagalur: The Region Behind the GI

Coffee in India started here, on the slopes below Baba Budangiri, and the district still sets what Indian arabica is expected to taste like.

Chikmagalur, in the Western Ghats of Karnataka

Chikmagalur is a district in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, on the western edge of the Deccan plateau. It is where coffee cultivation in India began, and it remains the reference point for Indian arabica.

The geography

The district runs from around 700 m in the eastern plains up past 1,900 m at Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka. Coffee occupies the middle of that range, on slopes that catch the south-west monsoon as it comes over the Ghats.

That position produces the two conditions the crop needs: heavy, reliable monsoon rainfall between June and September, and a dry, cool period from December through February when the cherry ripens and can be dried.

The Baba Budangiri range on the northern edge is where the first plants were established, and the name still carries weight in the trade.

The Geographical Indication

Chikmagalur Arabica carries a GI tag under Indian law.

A GI is a legal instrument, not a quality mark. It ties a product name to a defined geographic area and, usually, to a specification — so that the name cannot be applied to coffee from elsewhere. It says where a coffee is from. It does not say how good it is, and it does not certify farming practice.

For a buyer the practical value is narrow but real: it is an independent statement of origin, which is one of the things a traceability claim rests on. It is not a substitute for plot geolocation under EUDR, which asks a different and more demanding question.

The 2025/26 season

Chikmagalur received about 28% above average rainfall in the 2025/26 season. Hassan, the neighbouring district, was below average.

Above-average rain in the Ghats is a mixed result and worth reading properly:

  • Good for yield. Water availability through the fruit-filling period lifts bean size and the number of cherries carried.
  • Bad for disease. Continuous wet raises pressure from black rot in arabica and fruit rot in robusta, both of which reduce the harvestable crop.
  • Bad for drying. Late or extended rain into the drying window forces slower, more careful drying, and a farm without covered space loses lots.

This is the standard caveat on Indian post-blossom estimates. The national figure of roughly 403,000 tonnes for 2025/26 is a forecast made at flowering, and rain that helped the flowering can hurt the harvest.

The farming system

Chikmagalur coffee is almost entirely shade-grown under a two-tier canopy, with the coffee interplanted — black pepper trained up the shade trees, cardamom and areca in the understorey, and fruit trees through the block.

This is not a sustainability programme retrofitted onto a plantation. It is how the district has farmed for a long time, and it is the reason Indian coffee farms read as forest from the air.

What it tastes like

Chikmagalur arabica, washed, sits low in acidity and full in body, running to cocoa, spice and dried fruit rather than citrus or florals. Naturals push further into dried fruit and sweetness.

The district also produces robusta, and a great deal of it, on the lower blocks.

The other districts

For context rather than completeness:

  • Kodagu (Coorg) — larger by volume, more robusta-weighted.
  • Hassan — adjacent to Chikmagalur, drier this season.
  • Wayanad and Idukki (Kerala) and the Nilgiris (Tamil Nadu) — different rainfall patterns, Wayanad strongly robusta.

Karnataka as a whole accounts for close to 69% of Indian production.

The estate

Hoysala farms in Chikmagalur, in the village of Angadi, under continuous two-tier shade covering about 65% of the estate. The blocks run from 900 m to 1,450 m. Despite the heavy season, the estate lost nothing to rain.
